Leaves Left: Things I Have Found in Library Books

Library LOLs

  • One of the Circ workers left a book on the mending shelf that was thoroughly soaked with water and reeking of mildew, and stuck to it was a note saying that the patron who returned it claimed it was like that when they checked it out.

  • Random thoughts I've had lately about books:
    1. Why do book printers make books so tall and so wide that they won't fit on a standard bookshelf?
    2. Why are some books constructed without spine cloth?
    3. If everyone who has a borrowed library book in their possession right now returned those books all at once, how screwed would the Libraries be for space?

    Things Found, Public Library Edition

Since the Public Library doesn't flip through their books upon return by patrons, I've found some pretty interesting things stuck inside as bookmarks. Besides the usual checkout receipts and tiny bits of scraps of paper, I've come across mostly used pads of small post-it notes, Valentines Day cards, business cards, and three one-dollar bills. I'm going to start making lists and posting them here, just for fun. Scans may accompany depending on how much time I have.

Things I found in books today:
    1. a slightly used emery board in a book on aromatherapy
    2. paperclips
    3. small, blue, square-shaped pill stuck inside a book on medication identification (turned out to be a wintergreen Altoid)

    Low Low Prices

I found this post-it when I was checking in periodicals today.
The cover has been recreated from the original (in case anyone
thought I tore out the page just to post it, I don't do stuff like that).

This was written on the back endpaper of a book I came across today, so technically it's not a "leaf" that someone left, but I thought it was cute. I wonder if Charlotte made it through ok.

    Chapter 2: Sea Cat

This was found in a book of poetry, if I recall correctly. It was written on the back of a blank "While You Were Out" message slip.

I find this poem to be hilarious because it wasn't written by Laurence Gwynn. Laurence's poetry is nature-based with lots of oceanic imagery, and has sort of a new-age feel to it. I think the person who wrote this poem was trying to keep with the imagery, but made it revolting in a sort of protest against the mood Laurence's poetry creates.

edit: Ok, so maybe I mistook the "Laurence Gwynn" line to be the author, and instead the poem should read "...hairball upon\Laurence Gwynn." I don't know.
